Hi and welcome! Very soon it will be Halloween night.

The costumes are ready to go on, the pumpkin is glowing, sweets are in the baskets, and the little ones in your care are buzzing.

You don't need a big party or a screen to make it a Halloween Music in the Moment special activity.

Fifteen minutes of well- chosen music can turn the excitement into joyful, safe, brain-building play: singing, moving, listening and playing, all at the speed of a small child.

This guide gives you everything in one place: a short history of the night, why children love the sounds of it, what makes a Halloween music activity actually work, ten quality songs with the key, meter, characters, props and hand-held instruments for each, a 15-minute running order, and a printable grid for visual learners.

At the end you will also find a link to our training which you can complete in under 8 minutes, fill a short form and access all resources including the companion Guess the Scary Song flash card set to print and use straight away.

1. Halloween is celebrated on the 31st of October

A very short history

Halloween falls on 31 October, the night before All Saints' Day.

Its roots reach back to Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival marking the end of harvest and the turn towards winter, when people lit fires, dressed up and told stories to keep the dark company. Over the centuries it merged with the Christian All Hallows' Eve and travelled across the Atlantic and back, giving us carved lanterns (first made from turnips), costumes and trick-or-treating.

For a child under five, it simply means: dressing up, pumpkins, a little bit of pretend-scary, sweets, and staying up later than usual. That mix of thrill and safety is exactly what makes it such good learning ground for music.

What do children love to listen to on Halloween, and why?

• Rhymes and counting chants. Predictable patterns they can join in with (Five Little Pumpkins). Repetition builds confidence and language.

• Creaks, whooshes and “oooh”. Vocal play is a baby's first instrument. Sliding voices, slide whistles and rain sticks invite them to explore pitch.

• Minor-key tunes and low drums. They sound mysterious, which gives a gentle thrill. With a smiling adult nearby, it is safe-scary.

• Music that tells a story. Orchestras acting out skeletons, trolls and puppets give children characters to follow with their bodies.

• The pause before the surprise. Anticipation and release is peek-a-boo set to music, and every baby on earth loves it.

• A calm lullaby to finish. A slow, swaying ending settles little bodies and gives the session a warm close.

The short science bit

Music learning happens through the Body, the Heart and the Mind. Halloween music touches all three:

BODY: rocking, bouncing and tiptoeing build the vestibular system, our sense of balance and movement. HEART: shared, safe-scary moments build emotional regulation and connection.

MIND: rhymes, rhythms and melodies prepare children for language and for hearing music in their heads.

Edwin Gordon's Music Learning Theory adds one more ingredient: children need to hear lots of music in different keys and meters, not only bright major tunes in two-beat patterns.

A Halloween Music in The Moment special, is the perfect excuse to introduce minor keys and rocking triple-time songs.

2. What makes a great Halloween music activity work?

After many seasons of Halloween sessions, these eight principles separate the activities that spark joy from the ones that overwhelm.

1. Spooky-sweet, never scary. Friendly characters, a smile in your voice and the words “it's pretend” keep the thrill gentle. Let children control how close and how loud things get.

2. Body first. Pat, rock, sway and tiptoe before you ask for singing. Movement is how under-5s understand music.

3. One prop, one job. A scarf can be the wind, a ghost or a wing, but give it one job at a time so it does not become a distraction.

4. Contrast is the lesson. Loud and quiet, fast and slow, high and low, stop and go. Halloween is made of them.

5. Silence is an instrument. The freeze, the held breath before BOO, the final stillness: they are where children listen hardest.

6. Repeat, then twist. Do it the same way three times, then change one thing (whisper it, tiptoe it, swap roles).

7. Your voice is enough. No need to perform. Sing unaccompanied in a comfortable low voice and children learn the tune and the pitch.

8. Keep it to 15 minutes. Welcome, sing, move, play, settle. Short sessions that finish on a calm note leave children wanting more.

Spooky-safe checklist

Keep the lights low rather than off, and let children choose to watch from your lap.

Offer ear defenders or a quiet corner, and choose a “whisper” version of any big surprise.

Avoid masks as props. Scarves, hats and soft toys are friendlier and safer.
Check prop sizes: nothing smaller than a toddler's fist for under-3s, and always supervise instruments.

Say “dancing bones” and “The Puppet March” if a family has recently been bereaved.

3. Going outside the box: the Jump Right In song lists

Most Halloween playlists repeat the same five songs. To go further, we dug into the published track lists of Jump Right In: The General Music Series (GIA Publications), written by Beth Bolton, Cynthia Taggart, Alison Reynolds, Wendy Valerio and Edwin E. Gordon. It is a research-based K to 4 series built on Music Learning Theory, with folk songs and chants from around the world sequenced by tonality and meter.

That is exactly why it is such a treasure chest for Halloween: minor keys, rocking triple meters and spooky characters, all in short songs that are easy to learn by ear.

Here are the Halloween-friendly titles we found in the Jump Right In Music Play Kindergarten to Grade 4 track lists, with the student-book page of each.

The other four step outside the box into film and orchestral music that babies and under-5s adore.

How to read each card

KEY is the home note and scale (minor sounds mysterious, major sounds bright). For chants, the key is flexible: sing in whatever suits your voice.

METER TYPE is how the beats group. Duple (1-2, 1-2) feels like a march or a bounce. Triple (1-2- 3, or two groups of 1-2-3 in 6/8) feels like a waltz or a rock.

CHARACTERS EXPLORED are the creatures and people children can act out. PROPS and

SUGGESTED PROPS what we recommend for each piece based on the characters in one of your Props: Music in the Moment basket.

HAND-HELD INSTRUMENTS use the same categories as your Music in the Moment basket labels. Pick and mix. Be creative!
